CEOs! Pay hike!

I came across an article titled “CEO salary averages Rs 2 crore and is rising” in Business Line dated 24th February, 2012. (http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/article2923625.ece) This article made me to think about the reason why CEO’s salary is growing at a very high rate.

Actually in the 1980s, CEO’s salary was 42 times more than average hourly workers pay. But now, it is 342 times more. Another important fact is that the percentage rise in executives’ pay is around 7% per year, which is considered to be low with regards to the increase in CEO’s salary of about 24%. Employees normally feel that this wide difference in pay is unsympathetic. It is expected to have a proportionate increase in pay for all the employees of the organization including CEOs. The concept called “Pay for Performance” has thrown the seed in the minds of the employees to think about proportionate payment. But, I feel it’s worth to pay high for CEOs. A small example will clearly tell you the reason why I think this way. When you take the “Head of Finance”, he is supposed to manage all the activities that are financially related to the organization. But the work of a CEO is to strategically align all the activities of the entire organization along with the global competition. His importance and role in the development of organization is incomparable with others. And at the same time, it is competitive enough to have CEOs who are having an holistic approach.  Why are all the HR professionals talking about succession planning? Is it so very important in any organization? Yes, it is. Whatever may be the size of the organization, it needs a leader who is capable of taking good managerial decisions in the widely diversified business environment. If they fail to do, they start searching for “Best CEOs” around the world and headhunt them. There arises the point of increase in pay to such top executives. In addition to this, there seems to be a generic relationship between CEO’s pay and the market value of that organization. The higher market value implicitly conveys the virtuous performance of the organization, which is headed by an effective leader. To quote a real time example, let me take the largest electronic gadgets manufacturer Apple. When Steve Jobs publically announced that Tim Cook will replace him as CEO, Apple has observed volatility in its market value. What does this convey? This strongly ensures the belief of investors on top executives. So, I think it’s worth paying them to lead the world!

  1. I can go with your point, Leaders should paid more than the other employees but there is no need to pay 342 times more. CEO is not only the responsible for success its a team work. Take the Steve jobs case itself,he miserably failed in hardware project NEXT after that he made pixar a great success with the help of great team. CEO is not only the responsible for great success. Success is purely a team work.
I want to quote some more examples to support my point.Take the case of Wipro miserably failed when they were having two CEOs.
Another one is HP, management through away the CEO after taking a wrong decision of acquiring Compaq, now the company is struggling to make profit.
one more thing i want to discuss is high CEO salary affect the profit of the organisation.World economy is struggling, company's are not able to make money so it's right time to restructure the CEO salary.

  2. The CEO acts as the backbone of the organization, he makes the journey of the organization to score the target goal and he is not just paid for the job he does, but he is conducing his life towards the organization. So, the role matters here and he deserves to get the pay.

  5. I don't think CEO should be paid so high because it creates the disparities among people ego issues. It creates a wide gap between the distribution of wealth among people. So, richer get richer and poorer get poorer. It is a major problem and wealth is not properly distributed.

  6. Hi BBW,

While it is ok to say that since the CEO is the head of the org, and who is totally responsible for the organisation's success / failure, I would also want you to consider looking at CEO's remuneration in terms of the actual "work" done - that is, is the CEO doing "work", or "managing work"?

If one can get clarity on this, then probably, we will be able to better address the issue of "exorbitant" CEO remuneration!

  7. hai...

CEO being the highest ranking executive can be paid more. But the hike of 24% year on year is not permissible.I feel that the pay hike for CEO can be within or equal to 10%.when other executives get only 7% hike, the CEO can be paid less.

  8. CEO,s being the head of the organization doesn't mean that he can be availed with as many times hike of salary...i totally disagree....how much ever efficiently they work their contribution in any way would be comparable to the subordinate employees....after all....even a CEO and a subordinate....both are from the same species...."HUMAN BEINGS"

    1. Hi..
According to me CEO can be paid higher compensation. He is the one who has more responsibilities and duties for organization success. He formulates the strategy and knows how to manage the workforce. Definitely CEO is more competent enough to handle the work when compared to executive.

  10. I think CEO's should be given a percentage in the profit growth of the company. It means if the performance of the CEO (managing the organisation) is good, then naturally the profits will grow. So CEO's can be given a percentage from the hike in profits(like incentives)
