The
operating system behemoth Microsoft, unveils the first widely available test
version of Windows 8 on Wednesday (Mar 7, 2012), giving the public the first
chance to try out the new OS. How is Android by Google, going to react to
this?
The Product
Windows
8 is Microsoft’s first operating system which is compatible with low power microprocessor
designed by ARM holding, who have become the standard processor manufacturers
for tablets, smart phones and other devices. It will also work with traditional
x86 chips made by Intel Corp for desktops and laptops. Windows 8 features a
completely new interface to the users which was borrowed from “Metro"
style of the current Windows Phone software. It features blocks or tiles which
can be moved around the screen, so you can see your emails, voice messages or
Facebook notification at a glance. This multitasking feature is missing in Android.
The Verdict
The biggest challenge of any
operating system is whether it can attract the support of software developers,
who build applications. If Windows 8 can score on that, it may help Microsoft
to regain its supremacy.
According Google’s
Mobile and Digital Content division lead, Andy Rubin, 300 million activations,
with 850,000 new Android devices are coming on line each day. There are now at
least 1,000 different Android devices in market and 450,000 apps in
the Android Marketplace. All impressive numbers, but these stats are giving
nightmares to Windows 8!
What
are your thoughts? Will Microsoft take the tablet and smart phone market by
storm? Or is it a little too late?
Hi Asif,
ReplyDeleteI think the first moot question to ask is: What happened to Windows 7? Was it a success?
Whatever the answers, the next question to ask is: What is the need for Windows 8? What is Microsoft's experience in the field of Smart Phone OS?
Probably, another interesting way of looking at this is to see if the OS is priced competitively, or bundled along with the phone!
It was admitted Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer during the opening keynote at the 2011 Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, held at Los Angles.
ReplyDeleteNow I would like to answer the second question, why windows 8? It is the first operating system from Microsoft which is compatible with low power microprocessor which helps the Microsoft to enter into the Tablet PC market where the Android and Apple are dominating.A recent study from Boston Consulting Group reveals that 42 percent of US consumers prefer a Windows operating system on a tablet over all others. iOS came in second at 27 percent with Android rounding out the podium at 20 percent. BlackBerry, PalmOS and MeeGo all had less than 10 percent each. They study also shows that customers are associate with the windows for a long time,So the user can loving to use Windows software in their Tablet PC.This is good news for the windows.
If you talking about the pricing of OS where the other challenge lies, I think the price should be price competitively and pricing should attractable to the application creators.
Windows 8 is a bold step forward for Microsoft, since the experience on mobile devices — specifically, tablets — was a key part of its inception. It looks and works differently than any version of Windows ever made.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the iPad is dominant in tablets, the market is still growing. At the same time, traditional PCs (laptops and desktops) are relatively stagnant.
But in order for this new Metro platform to succeed at all it has to get the support from high-quality apps developer and hardware manufacturers all across the world throwing their weight behind Windows-8.I think it's the first time in the history of Microsoft to allow the open source application developers.I am expecting a cut-throat competition in this market after the introduction of Windows-8.
